a buddhist priest and social activist. head teacher, founder and abbot upaya zen center in santa fe, new mexico. worked with dying people since 1970. founded the project on being with dying and the upaya prison project as well as the ojai foundation. on the board of mind and life, lindisfarne association, one-heart, upaya zen center, network of grateful living, among others, founded the nomads clinic in 1981. author of seven books. favorite of these is “the fruitful darkness.” living in a buddhist monastery in santa fe, new mexico with an extraordinary group of practitioners from twenty to sixtyfive, with lots of diversity in the sangha and enthusiastic practioners. founded the prajna mountain buddhist order and co-founder of the zen peacemaker order. student of dae soen sa nim, thich nhat hanh, and tetsugan bernie glassman. close friend of the late francisco varela.
